Wells

For a man, a well (in a dream) signifies a cheerful woman, and for awoman it signifies a man of good character, because there is benefit ina well and there is no harm in it. It is also indicative of a scholar, andit may simply be a prison or a grave or a plot. As for a prison and thegrave, that is because of the similarity between them and because wellsare often used as prisons. As for it signifying a plot, that is becauseholes in dreams usually indicate plotting. If a person dreams that he dug a well for a man, it indicates that hewill plot against that man but the plot will backfire against him. Thepoet said: O digger of the well, make it spacious, because the one who digs awell will soon fall into it. If a person dreams that he dug a well and there was water in it, hewill marry a wealthy woman and will cheat her. If there was no water init, then the woman does not have any wealth. If he dreams that he fellinto a well, he will die, as is also the case if he dreams that he fell intoa dry well. If he sees his feet dangling in a well, he will be a victim of aplot against his wealth. If he dreams that he went down into a well and when he got halfwayhe gave the call to prayer, he is going to travel, because descending intothe well signifies disappearing in the land, and disappearing in the landmeans travelling. The call to prayer signifies high position, so halfwaythrough his journey he will attain leadership and ample income. But ifhe heard the call to prayer when he was halfway down the well, he will be dismissed if he was in a position of authority and he will incur lossesin business if he is a trader, if he cannot reach what he wanted whichwas at the bottom of the well. A well may also indicate a man of high position in the place seenin the dream. If the water is sweet, then that man will be easy-going,otherwise he will not. If the dreamer sees a well from which anyonewho comes to it can drink by means of a rope, that indicates that in thatplace there is a man or woman from whom the people benefit in theirlivelihood and he will be thought of highly because of what is indicatedby the rope, because Allah says: "And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah."[Aal 'Imraan 3:103] A well that is found in a residential quarter where people can reachit easily may signify a prostitute to whom everyone goes, and the ropeand bucket of the well signify the men who love her, and whateverhappens to them, good or bad, is because of her. A man said to Ibn 'Abbaas (May Allah be please with him): I dreamt that I lowered a bucket intoa well and two thirds of the bucket got filled and one third remainedempty. He said to him: You have been absent from your house for sixmonths, and your wife is pregnant and will give birth to a son. The well represents a woman, the bucket represents a man and the waterrepresents good news in the well, which is like the good news thatwas in the dry well where Yoosuf (May Allah be please with him) was. So I realized that it wasforetelling a son. The two thirds of the bucket represent six months andthe remaining third is three months. He said: You are right.
